What Orlando Homeowners Are Saying

Zebra shade installation Dr. Phillips Orlando — Bespoke Blinds

Five Things That Affect How Your Zebra Shades Perform

The fabric, the openness level, the headrail, the fit, and the window direction all matter. Here is

Florida’s West-Facing Windows Are a Heat Problem, Not Just a Light Problem

An east or north-facing window in the afternoon is manageable. A west-facing window at 3pm in Central Florida is a different situation. The fabric you choose for that window needs to reduce heat transfer, not just soften light. Zebra shades with a solar-rated outer layer cut heat gain measurably during peak afternoon hours and reduce the load on your AC. We assess each window’s sun exposure during your consultation and recommend the right configuration for the direction it faces — not a one-size answer for the whole house.

The Fit Determines Whether You Get Privacy

A shade that is a half-inch too narrow leaves a visible gap on each side. At night with lights on inside, that gap eliminates privacy entirely. Custom-measured zebra shades are fabricated to your exact window dimensions so the panel sits flush with the frame and light does not spill around the edges. This is the difference between a shade that functions and one that looks right but does not actually do the job.

Fabric Opacity: What Each Level Does

Light-filtering — Softens direct sun and reduces glare. Outward visibility is maintained during the day. The right choice for living rooms and common areas where you want natural light without harsh Florida afternoon sun beating directly into the space.

Room-darkening — Substantially reduces light when the solid bands are aligned. Not full blackout, but noticeably darker and more private. Right for bedrooms and home offices where screen glare is a problem.

Motorized — Any opacity in a motorized configuration. Remote, app, Alexa, or Google Home. The practical choice for high windows, wide openings, and any room where reaching the shade manually is inconvenient. See the full motorized blinds page

Headrail Options Affect the Finished Look

An open-roll headrail shows the fabric tube at the top — minimal, works in casual spaces. A cassette headrail encloses the roller behind a rigid housing — cleaner line, reduces light gap at the top, better fit for modern or finished interiors. We carry both. We will show you samples of each during your consultation so you see what they look like in your actual space.

Cordless and Motorized Configurations

Every zebra shade we install is available cordless. If you have young children or pets, we will recommend a cordless or motorized configuration during your consultation. No hanging loops, no accessible cords. Motorized zebra shades are 100% cordless by design.

Zebra Shade FAQs

Please reach us at bespokeblindsdesign@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Same product, different names. Zebra blinds and zebra shades refer to the same dual-layer window treatment — alternating sheer and solid fabric bands on a single roller. You’ll also see them called transitional shades, banded shades, or dual shades depending on the manufacturer. At Bespoke Blinds, we use both terms interchangeably. If you’re searching for zebra blinds installation in Orlando or Central Florida, you’re in the right place.

For most standard windows in Central Florida homes, custom-measured and professionally installed zebra shades run $175 to $450 per window. Motorized zebra shades run $350 to $650 per window. A whole-room installation across four to six windows typically falls between $700 and $2,200. The final number depends on window size, fabric selection, and headrail type. We give you an exact written quote for every window at your free in-home consultation — no ranges after you commit, no surprises at installation.

For Central Florida homes, yes — when specified correctly. The dual-layer design gives you continuous light adjustment that a standard roller shade can’t match: sheer for diffused daylight, solid for privacy, or anywhere in between. The value comes from eliminating the need for two separate window treatments in rooms where conditions change throughout the day. The caveat is fabric quality. Cheap zebra shades degrade fast under Florida’s UV load. Custom-fabricated shades with climate-appropriate fabric hold up 7 to 10 years. Off-the-shelf product from a big-box store in the same conditions may last 2 to 3.

Yes, when the right fabric is specified for the window’s orientation. A solar-rated outer layer reduces heat gain through west- and south-facing windows even when the sheer bands are open — that’s where the energy benefit comes from, not from keeping the shade fully down all afternoon. For east- and north-facing windows, a standard light-filtering fabric is usually sufficient. We assess each window’s sun exposure during your in-home consultation and recommend the right fabric per window, not a single answer for the whole house.

Yes. Remote, wall switch, app, Alexa, and Google Home-compatible motorized options are available across all fabric types. We configure all smart home connections on-site the day of installation — you don’t have to finish setup after we leave. Motorized is the practical choice for high windows, wide openings, and any space where reaching the shade manually every day is inconvenient. It’s also the safest configuration for homes with young children — no cords, no loops, nothing to pull.

For regular maintenance, a soft-brush vacuum attachment run lightly along the fabric bands is enough to remove dust. For spot cleaning, a damp cloth with mild dish soap on the soiled area — blot, don’t rub — then allow to air dry fully before rolling the shade up. Do not saturate the fabric or use solvent-based cleaners. In Central Florida’s humidity, making sure the shade is fully dry before closing it prevents mildew from developing in the rolled fabric. Professional ultrasonic cleaning is available for shades that need a deeper clean without removal from the headrail.
