These three terms get used interchangeably, but they're built differently and perform differently in a Florida home.
Blinds have horizontal or vertical slats that tilt open and closed, giving you precise control over how much light enters without fully opening or closing the window. Faux wood blinds fall into this category.
Shades are a single piece of fabric or cellular material that raises and lowers as one unit. There's no tilt function — shades are either open, closed, or somewhere in between. Roman, cellular, roller, and zebra shades are all shades, despite "zebra blinds" being a common search term for the same product.
Shutters are hinged, framed panels mounted directly to the window with adjustable louvers. They're the only one of the three that's a permanent architectural fixture rather than a mounted treatment.
Orlando's year-round sun means unshaded windows are a direct path for heat gain, which shows up as a higher cooling bill and faded flooring or furniture near the window.
Cellular shades are the strongest energy-efficiency option we install. Their honeycomb structure traps a layer of air between the glass and the room, which reduces heat transfer in both directions — less heat in during Florida summers, less heat loss on the rare cold snap. Double-cell versions extend that insulation further.
Plantation shutters and closed blinds also block direct sunlight, which reduces solar heat gain and protects flooring and furniture from UV fading, though they don't create the same sealed air pocket a cellular shade does.
If energy efficiency is the deciding factor for a specific room — a west-facing living room or a sunroom, for example — say so at your consultation. We'll point you to the option that fits that specific window's sun exposure.
Cellular shades with a blackout liner or roller shades with blackout fabric are the most common choice. Zebra shades work if you want adjustable privacy without full blackout.
Faux wood blinds hold up best in moisture-prone rooms. Composite plantation shutters are also moisture-resistant if you want a more finished look.
Plantation shutters, roman shades, and zebra shades are the most common choices, largely based on how much adjustable light control you want without going fully dark.
Roller shades and vertical faux wood blinds are the practical options — see the Roller Shades Orlando page for sizing detail on wide openings.
Plantation shutters are the most common whole-home choice for consistency and resale value, especially in Winter Park, Windermere, and other HOA-governed Orlando communities.
Ready-made blinds and shades are built to standard window sizes, which rarely match older Orlando homes or newer construction with non-standard window dimensions. A treatment that doesn't fit the frame leaves gaps that let in light, heat, and glare around the edges — undermining the exact problem you bought it to solve.
Every product on this page is custom measured and fabricated to your specific windows, then installed by the same team that took the measurements — not a separate installation crew working from someone else's numbers.

Yes — "zebra blinds" and "zebra shades" refer to the same product: alternating sheer and solid fabric stripes that adjust from full privacy to full view. Bespoke Blinds installs these under either name.
We install plantation shutters, faux wood blinds, roman shades, cellular shades, zebra shades, roller shades, and motorized versions of each. Commercial window treatments are also available — priced per project at consultation.
Cellular shades offer the strongest energy efficiency of anything we install — their honeycomb design traps air to reduce heat transfer through the window. Plantation shutters and closed blinds also block direct sunlight and reduce solar heat gain, though without the sealed air pocket a cellular shade creates.
Yes. We regularly work in HOA-governed communities across Winter Park, Windermere, Dr. Phillips, Lake Nona, and Celebration, and handle the design documentation those communities typically require for shutters.
Ready-made treatments are built to standard window sizes, which leaves gaps around non-standard frames — a common issue in both older Orlando homes and newer construction. Custom measurement eliminates that gap, along with the light and heat leakage that comes with it.
